ABOUT THE PLAY
Shakespeare Summer Nights – Variations is an hommage to the Bard of literature which takes the spectator on a voyage from the Elizabethan Age up to present-day. It is conveyed through Shakespearian sonnets and motifs taken from royal chronicles, tragedies and mythical love scenes. Word, movement and music all lead us through narrative structure built from the relations between the verse, moreover through both its scenic interpretation and transformation all over four centuries, but first and foremost in order to expose his contemporaneousness which, in chosen scenes, talks about (anti)social circumstances that are affecting us. It talks about the refugees, those in power and those who depose them, about an individual lost in turbulent times while in search for their own identity. All the modes of this scenic expression are equally important in as much as to revive the atmosphere of theatrical magic immanent to his works.
Moreover, this show with its selection of topics and motifs shows why Shakespeare is so painfully contemporaneous, unabashedly modern and ever so familiar to us. Even today, mousetraps are used to unmask the guilty, frauds to seize the power, people vanishing in shipwrecks while tempests create new Calibans.
