The intention of the City Theatre Podgorica has long been to deal with great literary works, and the Decameron is a landmark literature with parallels drawn to the present time, primarily when it comes to the scourge of disease and the threats of death in general, that’s on the one hand, and on the other hand is the counterpoint of life to outgrow the fear of death, disease, to resist some dogma, which is what this play is about. These are common denominators between the Renaissance and the present moment.

The play talks about a person’s desire to be free, we’re talking about personal freedom, that the rights of personal freedom and choice are very important and that’s something every person should fight for. When we are born, we are given some frameworks that we didn’t choose: religion, many social and family frameworks and norms, and that’s something every person should choose for themselves. And in fact, that personal freedom is still the most important thing today, and on the other hand, there is manipulation that is always around us and needs to be recognised. On the other hand, the play tells us that when we put on any costume, that “facade” never creates a person and that the essence is far behind it. Mankind from the Decameron to today changes the packaging, but not the essence. We’re talking about all of us, with all our flaws and shortcomings, the idea that we are the centre of the world and that we are immortal, which is irony and an eternal search for what a person can never find and define, and somehow that essence of life always eludes us.
