The unfinished satirical novel by Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek was published in 1923. The writer planned for the work to consist of 6 parts, but he finished only four due to his death from a heart attack in 1923. All four parts were published in one book. The plot of the novel revolves around the Czech veteran Josef Švejk and his experiences in the army. The story begins with the assassination in Sarajevo that preceded World War I. Švejk is so excited to serve his country in the war that no one can say with certainty whether he is an imbecile or a cunning saboteur of the Austro-Hungarian army.
