“The Human Voice” is the work of Jean Cocteau that has been most widely interpreted by other artists. This provocative mono-surrealist theatrical dictum opens a space for discussion on many themes and cries out to be interpreted and re-interpreted in every era – including today. The voice of a woman in a “nervous breakdown” trying to find meaning and logic in her emotional and existential collapse – which arises as a consequence of something that grows from a seemingly banal situation into personal tragedy – represents a search for identity. What is the metamorphosis of that voice? And what happens if, in the spirit of surrealism, this dramatic text becomes a personal statement – or a pseudo-opera – that then transforms into an abstract sound installation? Whose is my human voice?
