BELGRADE DRAMA THEATRE: I. Martinić / based on the film by L Visconti TWILIGHT OF THE GODS (GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG)

Ivor Martinić poštuje, u specifičnoj dramaturškoj stilizaciji slavnog filma Luchina Viscontija (1969), vremenski slijed moralnog posrnuća, a političkog uspona i bogaćenja obitelji Von Essenbeck (aluzija na čuvenu porodicu Krupp), koji počinje paljenjem Rajhstaga 1933. godine, a završava se u Noći dugih noževa 1934.

In his specific dramaturgical stylisation of Luchino Visconti’s famous film (1969), Ivor Martinić follows the chronological sequence of moral decline and political rise and enrichment of the Von Essenbeck family (an allusion to the famous Krupp family), which begins with the Reichstag fire in 1933 and ends with the Night of the Long Knives in 1934. Everything is connected, or rather condensed into one ghostly, macabre night celebrating the fall of old Germany and the birth of Nazism. An elegant birthday celebration turns into a brutal, bloody “musical chairs,” where in each round someone is eliminated, more precisely loses their life, and the masks of civilised development (scruples, empathy, self-control) rapidly fall away, revealing the true meaning, in the final image, of this bestial game of power.
