A. Hemon: The World and Everything in It / Bejturan and the Rose

“The World and Everything in It” is a multilingual, polyphonic, thrilling epic about love and exile. Based on Aleksandar Hemon’s novel “Bejturan and the Rose,” the performance follows one of the most beautiful love stories in contemporary literature, about two Sarajevo recruits Rafael Pinto and Osman Karišik, who meet on the front during World War I and fall in love with each other. The story takes us through decades, cities and deserts of the world, from Sarajevo, through Galicia, Tashkent and the Taklamakan Desert to Shanghai and Hong Kong. Moving through war, hunger, exile, illness, births and deaths, “The World and Everything in It” confronts us with questions about what love can survive, in what forms it appears, and whether it is a sufficient driving force to keep one alive even in the most extreme circumstances.
